Choosing Your Beat Categories

When you are going to start selling your beats one of the most important things to consider is the different genres that you use to classify your beats. There are really only a couple plausible option so I will go over some of the pros and cons of each, briefly discussing why I feel the way that I do.
I think the most obvious option is to classify your music as west coast beats, east coast beats, dirty south beats, etc. This is an ok strategy to have but I think that in general the problem lies in that you are doing the exact same thing as everybody else. It doesn’t do anything to set you apart. Granted it is clear, concise and easy to follow but I don’t think it gives off a very good first impression.
That being said, I think a better option is classify beats by artists. Using Lil Wayne beats, TI beats, Jay-Z beats, Snoop Dogg beats, as classifications. This has a couple significant benefits and only a few disadvantages. The first of the benefits is that it will separate you from other websites. Obviously this is not a huge difference but I feel like it does a great deal to improve visitor’s first impression. It may not make any difference to some but I think the certain percentage will be caught off guard, in a good way. Secondly I think this makes it easier for you to classify your beats. If you were using Dirty South for your southern beats would where would you put beats that sound like lil wayne would rock.
Despite what you might think there is a huge difference between beats that T.I. would pick for his album and beats that Lil Wayne would pick for his album. Having the different artist gives you more options for this. Another benefit of using the artist’s names is that everybody can relate to specific artists. Even people who try to claim they don’t sound like anybody else or aren’t influenced by anybody else can relate to certain production styles.
The main problem with using different artists is that often when being so specific in the naming of your categories you will find that many of the different beats will overlap. You might want to put something in the TI section and also want to put it in the lil Wayne section and not know which one to put it in. This is a legitimate issue however I feel like it has a easy solution. Just put it in both. Sometimes people have to hear a track a couple times before they want to purchase it anyway. You might give them the second listen that they needed.
Take this advice if you are looking for it, because all in all there is a lot more that goes into selling beats than this. This is just the tip of the iceberg but it is something to consider.
