Clean Up After Burglary

By: David Gascoyne

Before starting to discuss on how to clean up your house after a burglary, we would first like to discuss how to prevent your house from burglary. It is always advisable to have a suspicious eye on any strangers roaming around near your place. We should keep our yard absolutely clean. You should not let anybody enter your yard if you don’t know that person. There should not be any dark area near your house where these burglars can hide easily and wait for you to get out of the house. The most important step to prevent burglary is that whenever you leave house, check every part of the house that you do not leave any window or gate open. You don’t want to make things easy for burglars. There should be a peephole in your main door so that you can see the person before opening door for any unknown person. Open eyes and ears are always required to keep our house from unwanted burglaries.

After a burglary, cleaning up the whole mess is not an easy task. Firstly, you should check the entire house for the items that are missing and then make a list of all of them. You should call the police immediately to let them know so that they can start searching for thieves. Make sure you report everything to police. Never try to hide anything from them, they will catch you immediately. Second thing, you should call the house insurance people immediately and let them know the list of all the items which are missing from your house.

Now, check your entire house for the places where burglars have entered. You should check safe, drawers and all corners of your house. Check for all the cash, ornaments, equipments and everything else which you think is important to you. Do not clean anything till the police have finished their inquiries otherwise police may raise questions about things.

After the police enquiry is over, then you can start cleaning up the whole mess. You should start from the main area. Collect all the items which the thieves have thrown around. Pick each item one by one and start keeping them at their respective places. Check if the burglars have broken any windows or doors to gain access to your house. You should get these doors and windows repaired immediately and this time please makes them hard enough to prevent burglars to gain entry into your house.

Check for the spill overs at all over places. Make sure you can clean up the spillovers immediately over your carpet, upholstery etc. otherwise these spillover stains can become permanent in very small time. Check for your carpet area if the burglars have left any unwanted marks there which need to be cleaned. Check for your toilets to make sure if they are clean. If the thieves have used the toilet or the bathroom then these neat to be cleaned with proper care as usually these burglars are very dirty. We should clean these places thoroughly with disinfectants.
