Set Off Outdoor Space With Use Of Finials

By: Peyton Taylor

The first time someone suggested that I use a finial outside I thought they were crazy. After all, finials are those things at either end of a curtain rod; right? They can be but they were talking about decorative finials that can be treated for outdoor use and used to really distinguish an outdoor space such as a deck or garden fence.

Once I saw them and realized what they were I was intrigued at how I could best use them to the advantage of the spaces I wanted to create. With that said, it is now very easy to see where finials can be a great addition and all at affordable prices. They are also available in several other fascinating materials other than wood, which makes them that more versatile.

You can purchase synthetic finials that mimic wood but last even longer than those made of redwood or cedar. By mimicking, I mean it can be painted or stained just like wood. If you decide on a wood product, the reason you will want to purchase a cedar or redwood finial is these types of wood have natural properties that already help protect the life of the product as they repel insects and water. Once you paint or stain them and put a clear coat over that they will last a good long while.

Another interesting finial is the copper ones. I haven’t found a lot of them but the ones I have found are both beautiful and unique. They are perfect for entrances into a drive, yard or garden. What I also like about anything copper is the potential for them to age each year through the elements. Eventually they will turn that old world patina that you see throughout some of the copper elements outside.

Once you decide which type and material you like you can then look for those places that they will really stand out. Entrances as talked about above are just one of those places. The four corners of your fence or deck, the bottom of a deck staircase, on either side of a gate or as markers in your garden. There are no limits at what you can do with the addition of a finial into your yard. It will turn heads and start conversations and people will ask you how on earth you ever thought do introduce a finial into your outdoor spaces.
